The summer of 2016 is here. So, like in the previous three years, I will waste every Friday of your summer releasing a name for the upcoming Dandy Dozen. The Dandy Dozen list consists of Seniors ONLY. I will be randomly releasing the student-athletes instead of releasing them in reverse rank (so that people cannot easily guess). The date each one being released will be associated with the rank. The top 2 will be the last two released. The release-process starts on May 27th.

#8 - Devin Rockette**Editor's Note: This is the fifth of 12 Dandy Dozen Seniors I am releasing which will be done each Friday. They will be AT RANDOM until the top two are released. You can see a schedule of which number will be released HERE. No. 10 will be released next week. Running a sub-4.4 40-yard dash has plenty of perks. One that earned Devin Rockette an offer from Ole Miss after showing off that speed at the Rebels camp and then committed a week later after performing another sub-4.4 at a Mississippi State camp. All of a sudden, SEC schools are looking at this speedy football player who got more playing time as the season wore on last year. Rockette ended up with 53 tackles last year, 4th among secondary players but also didn't see the playing time increase until racking up big plays in three consecutive games. Rockette picked off Madison Central QB Jack Walker in their game against the Jaguars. Then in the next game against Lafayette, Rockette blocked a Field Goal attempt and ended up taking it back for a touchdown only for the points to be wiped away on what ended up being a bogus block-in-the-back call way away from the play after the block occurred. Then against West Point in September, he forced and then recovered a fumble which he returned for his lone touchdown (that counted) for the season. That was a big turning point for Oxford in that region game. Rockette became a State Champion on the Track team being a part of the 4x200m team and also finished sixth on the relay team nationally to become an All-American. His team set a new 5A record with a time of 1:26.68. He also finished third in the 200m, behind fellow teammate JaQuan Webb. He looks to help the track team four-peat in the upcoming season. This is the year to prove his worth in football. The way to do it is to perform in games. #4 - Maggee Hobson**Editor's Note: This is the fourth of 12 Dandy Dozen Seniors I am releasing which will be done each Friday. They will be AT RANDOM until the top two are released. You can see a schedule of which number will be released HERE. Maggee Hobson has been starting on the Varsity Volleyball team since she first moved to Oxford before her 8th Grade year. Hobson moved here at the time Ross Bjork became the new Athletic Director at Ole Miss, because they are related. It has been a good thing for Ole Miss and has been a good thing for the Oxford Volleyball team. The uncanny arm velocity Hobson holds has been key to many Oxford wins and upsets over the last couple of seasons for the Lady Chargers and broke through to the second round of the Class II playoffs last season. Hobson led the team with 338 kills last season and had the highest kill percentage on the team with more than 25 attempts. She also led the team in service aces with 121. Despite not usually being in the back row aside from serving, she was third on the team in digs with 211. Much like Tiara King, Hobson improved in every statistic from a year ago in Girls Basketball. During the 2014-15 season, she averaged 5.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. During this past season, Hobson averaged 9.4 points (third on the team), 4.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. The game that allowed that confidence to happen was her 27 point performance the first game of the year against Calhoun City. She was also big in the 2-5A Tournament scoring 27 points against Saltillo and having her only double-double of the year with 24 points and 10 rebounds against West Point. Hobson was instrumental in leading the Lady Chargers to a 25-5 year last year. The time to contribute is over for Hobson. Leading the Volleyball team and leading the Girls Basketball team is going to be key for both teams to be successful this season. #5 - Tiara King**Editor's Note: This is the third of 12 Dandy Dozen Seniors I am releasing which will be done each Friday. They will be AT RANDOM until the top two are released. You can see a schedule of which number will be released HERE. No. 4 will be released next week. I'm not putting Tiara King at five for her offense. She's averaged just 5.8 PPG last season and 3.5 PPG the season before and improved her free throw percentage by nine percent from the two seasons. While having improved offensively even slightly, it is her defense the biggest reason why she starts and why Oxford went 25-5 and made a trip to Jackson last year. She led the team in steals last season with 3.4 thefts a game and nearly a quarter of all the steals Oxford had. She was the only player to reach the century mark in steals last season. King has improved all across the board from last season scoring 2.3 more PPG, 1.6 more rebounds per game, 1.2 more steals per game, even getting 0.3 more assists per game all while lowering her turnover rate per game. King also improved her field goal percentage (48 to 54) and her free throw percentage (18 to 27) from the 2014-15 season to 2015-16. Minutes played wasn't necessarily the reason, but maybe perhaps the coaching change that occurred last summer and the confidence given to King. Shayne Linzy is a fine coach but perhaps not the right one to utilize King's abilities. Cliff Ormon has been able to make better use of King's abilities as a scrappy defensive player and use her positive abilities on offense - as in being the point guard to go in and grab a rebound and steal an extra possession or even lay it in. Just scrap what she can on offense in making the extra effort. King also runs for the Girls Track program and came in second in the 100 meter dash earning eight points en route to a Girls Track title this past season and helped earn another eight points in the 4x100 meter relay. Obviously her speed will help in their attempt for a repeat title. Being a senior, she will need to be the leader of the Basketball team this season, her track speed should also help in their quest to repeat in track. #9 - Neil Chandler**Editor's Note: This is the second of 12 Dandy Dozen Seniors I am releasing which will be done each Friday. They will be AT RANDOM until the top two are released. You can see a schedule of which number will be released HERE. No. 5 will be released next week. Neil Chandler always had a special soccer talent. That was proven during a tryout for the Tupelo Futbol Club a few years ago. In his age group, there was just one spot open on their roster for their travel club and a serious number of players upwards of 50 tried to get to that one spot. Chandler ended up grabbing it. Turning to his senior year, he returns having led the team in goals the previous year according to Maxpreps. He also will have the task of leading a rather young team filled with juniors and sophomores into building the momentum they've built over last year in reaching the second round but falling short a second straight time to Germantown. Chandler will also have to learn a new style of play with a new head coach coming into the system and luckily unlike the situation three years ago, they will have the summer to start learning the system instead of trying to learn it on the fly during the season. The group of sophomores and juniors and the few remaining seniors that are on the team are the first group to come through the system that saw the rise and expansion of the travel teams in Oxford, so these group of athletes look to threaten taking Germantown off the 5A North Half Champion seat they've held for two straight years and try to return to the title game held in Madison. The time to learn is over, it's now time for him to lead this soccer team this year. |
