| I am a big fan of spirit days at OHS, for the most part I've always tried to bend the dress code and play the part when I was in high school between 2003-2007. Getting the students excited for the upcoming football game. Key words: "for the most part" I've always cringed when it gets to the date of the Crosstown Classic and the spirit day chosen for that game. Whichever it winds up being, it always involves the cheerleaders and a good portion of the student body at OHS wearing Lafayette gear. Many of you may remember the letter I wrote to the Oxford Eagle last year about the choice of that spirit day and criticized them for it (some have known for a lot longer). In case you forgot, here is that letter published September 8th, 2011:
According to the OHS website, "The cheerleaders are charged with raising the spirit of the entire OHS student body by planning a variety of spirit days and pep rallies." My entire time at OHS, my spirit was not raised (in fact lowered to the point where I make a sarcastic answer to any question regarding the game) with that spirit day and it has not been since leaving. The ENTIRE OHS student body also includes the Football Team, which put forth zero effort last year in getting bombarded during the 1st quarter to the tune of a 20-3 deficit start en route to a 40-12 rout. Before the bus ride over there, players were ticked off about what the other students were wearing in opposition to the team, which were wearing their team jerseys (as the team is supposed to do before an away game). This year, if that spirit day were to rear its ugly head, the ENTIRE SOUTHEAST will make fun of OHS for making up that spirit day (remember, the FSN TV crew will be at the school the day of the game shooting footage for the game that night). Which colors will be shown? Here is a fix for this: Why not wear Blue & Gold the day we play Lafayette? Is that too hard? Do we have enough pride to wear the school colors of OHS? If we happen to lose with a spirit day that actually supports our football players, it would make the loss easier to swallow knowing that many of our students were behind the team all day up until the buzzer sounds. All I have gotten out of that letter to the Eagle from the community is good remarks (around 15 people gave me positive reinforcement of that article) and no one criticized it or at least they did not voice it. This only shows my point has been made about the spirit of the football team - one of the main purposes of a "Spirit Day." Spirit days are meant to raise the spirit of that team's fanbase and even have a little fun on the side - not prohibited fun exclusively to 16 people but for all 900+ students or however many is at their school. Alums do come back to OHS every now and then and do get whiff of what is going on every now and then. I've done everything in my power to show my support for Oxford, wearing Blue & Gold the day of the Crosstown Classic. Although it seems I'm the only one that seems to wear it. It'd be nice if 900 or so other students wore Blue & Gold that day too so I won't be going into the game cheering all by myself. |
