The lowdown: The Oxford Chargers made the playoffs and clinched their spot nearly 3 weeks ago, knowing that they earned a home game. The problem until last week is who would be the team traveling to Oxford High School - a school that has not hosted a first round home game since 2007 and a total of one home playoff game since 2008.
Oxford was paired up to the 3-seed that would be coming out of 2-5A, but the diabolical happened in the region consisting of many teams near the Jackson area - a 5-way tie for 3rd. Provine - in which they had thought they were completely out of it when they lost to Ridgeland 38-33 last week - had won the tiebreaker based on point difference between the Rams and the other 4 schools. For those that paid attention to all the ways the teams from 2-5A would make the playoffs in the Football Region Standings Page, Provine was the only team that could lose their last game and still make the playoffs (let alone be a 3-seed). That is exactly what happened.
For Oxford to win, they must: Bend, but don't break - we've heard that before and that means don't give up the big play. In order to do that, Oxford needs to tackle well on defense. The Chargers did a better job of that last week against Clarksdale and yielded just 9 offensive points. Oxford needs to do an even better job this week - the season is on the line and one loss will end it.
For Provine to win, they must: Establish the Run - Because it is what they do, if they spend too much time throwing the ball, they will play into Oxford's hands. Provine is 1-5 in games in which they had to throw it at least 13 times. Provine runs the ball well enough, the pass will be dangerous. If they don't, Oxford will know the pass is coming. OHS has 13 interceptions on the year, two have gone back for Touchdowns.
Weather: At 7PM kickoff: 55*F and Mostly Clear then becoming Clear (0% chance of rain) - Temps are expected to drop close to 50 by the end of the game. Winds from the S at 5-12 MPH.
Other Notes: Oxford last played Provine in the second round of the 2004 4A playoffs. At the time, Provine was 11-0 and had just given up 7 points up to that game and had never trailed in that season. Oxford defeated Provine 16-13 in 2004, a g.
