No controversial things tonight. When Oxford got the ball, they wanted the clock to expire this time, and the working scoreboard allowed them to do that. Oxford held Grenada on downs after they had driven the ball for 7 minutes starting at their own 15 driving all the way to the Oxford 16 before the drive stalled and went over to Oxford on downs. Oxford was then able to run off the last 3:40 on the clock to preserve a 28-22 win. It was not however without a battle. Oxford tried to start the game off with an onside kick but failed to recover. Grenada drove the ball 60 yards to strike first. Grenada's PAT went wide left but they led 6-0. After the teams traded punts, OHS QB Parker Adamson had a pass tipped and was intercepted 43 yards for a pick-6. Grenada went for 2 and failed but led 12-0. The Oxford defense was able to solve a little bit of the Grenada offense and kept field position. Allowing Adamson to get a groove going and eventually found Glen Gordon on a 7-yard pass play, after a Cody Mills PAT - which he made all four on after each Touchdown - Oxford cut the lead to 12-7. On Oxford's next possession after forcing Grenada to a quick offensive possession, Adamson found Toler Presley on a normal curl route and slithered down the sideline, nearly brought down twice, then had the state of mind to find Nick Brown and lateraled it to him - somehow without the Grenada defense knowing he did (Brown ran 10 yards before anyone knew he had the ball) - and Brown darted into the endzone for the unconventional Touchdown and made it 14-12. A 52-yard FG try by Mills would fall short right before halftime at that score. Oxford came flying out of the gate in the second half with Gordon breaking free for 76 yards on the kickoff return - should've been 77 and OHS was fortunate to keep the ball after he had carelessly fumbled the ball without anyone actually stripping him and went out at the 1 instead of the endzone - had it gone through the end zone, it would have been a touchback and Grenada's football out at the 20. Jarius Barnes punched it in from a yard out on the next play and made it 21-12. Grenada's ensuing drive would last nearly 6 minutes but Oxford was able to hold them near the goal line to just a FG to make it 21-15 in favor of Oxford. Oxford's ensuing possession, they drove all the way to the Grenada 17. On a 3rd & 11, Adamson handed the ball off to Conrey Meagher who threw it to Nick Brown. Brown dodged two tacklers and made it to the end zone on the gadget play to make the score 28-15 after 3 quarters. After the teams each failed to score on their next possessions, Grenada was able to hit a WR in stride for 76 yards before being dragged from behind at the Oxford 4. Grenada QB Horan was able to punch it in from there on the next play (+ a successful PAT) made the s Oxford had a quick possession and punted back to Grenada at their 15. Grenada ate up 7 minutes of the 4th quarter clock and drove the ball 70 yards to the Oxford 15 yard line before a 4th Down incomplete pass turned the ball over on downs back to Oxford with 3:40 left. The 4th down play was set up by Xavier Peagues on 1st down when he read the play correctly and tackled the QB for a 5-yard loss, screwing up their play calling with a long down & distance play and then left them with a 4th & 11 which they had no choice but to pass which was incomplete. Oxford was able to get some first downs and ran out the last 3:40 off the clock, not allowing Grenada to get the ball back and securing the victory 28-22. It was a hard fought victory for the Oxford Chargers and one that did not have any ejections or controversial time problems. Most everyone that I did see shook hands after the game. Oxford was able to execute on offense for the most part - did have a couple tipped passes fell into Grenada's arms - but got enough offense. The defense did blow a couple coverages and allowed a big 76-yard play that led directly to a Touchdown, but did do a good job making Grenada have to grind and drive on the OHS defense to score. Grenada did keep cool heads during the game, but the defense wasn't on their toes enough. On several drives, Oxford got into an offensive groove and scored 4 Touchdowns on offense. Oxford faces the defending 3A State Champion Charleston Tigers at home next Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM. Charleston defeated Southaven Friday 34-26. ---------------------------------------------- **Editor's Note: I will usually not have any stats until Monday | |
