#20 Oxford vs. Gentry - Football 2008 - "GC's First Start"
The final of that game was 28-14, the 28 points was not really that eye-popping, it was how those 28 points were scored. The offense was clicking like clockwork, everything seemed to be running smoothly, he knew exactly what he was doing despite the fact this was his first ever start in a regulation high school game. The defense which had to work hard to keep the opponents out of the end zone because of the ineffectiveness of the offense the past couple game, got the game to a big enough margin that second-stringers could play. Gentry got a garbage TD late from those second-stringers to make the score as close as it did. |

It was this game that made me think that we had something special with him and the fact he was only a Sophomore made me only dream how far we could go. He went on to have a career record of 18-12 as the starting QB, no it was not the record I (or he) had in mind, I (and he) imagined fewer losses than that. He proceeded to break the school single-season passing yards and TD passes record during his senior year. I was proven right in that he got a Division-I Scholarship to Rice. What was very surprising is that he did not get more offers, especially one to Ole Miss when he was arguably the best QB in the state that year and had won the offensive 5A Player of the Year Award.
Do I see a Drew Brees story unfolding? We might see him in the NFL for all we know, win a Super Bowl and actually be more popular than the most popular Quarterback to ever set foot in Oxford.
