McAlister's is still today a heavy favorite for OHS & Ole Miss Students and for all residents in general to come and eat. One of the many reasons is McAlister's Famous Sweet Tea which you can purchase by the glass (or to go plastic cup) or by the gallon and you can even add "the works" with the purchase.
McAlister's opened before Duece McAllister - the former famous Running Back for the Ole Miss Rebels and the NFL's New Orleans Saints - went to school at Ole Miss. McAlister's at one point added a sandwich to the menu in his honor (called "The Duece" - which has since been taken off the menu) because of his Ole Miss ties and that the first restaurant was where Ole Miss was located.
Their menu includes at least 30 sandwich items that include all kinds of hot, grilled, club, and classic sandwiches. All sandwich orders include a pickle stick and a side item which ranges from a bag of chips to fruit to mac & cheese. You can also choose between 7 deli salads (salads with either ham, turkey or bacon in them) or you can choose the traditional garden salad. There are also 6 different deli spuds to choose from (spuds of course being baked potatoes) or you can make the simple choice of having "Justaspud" (a normal baked potato) or one loaded with just cheese in the potato. No meal is complete without dessert options. They come from cookies and brownies to New York Cheesecake and "Colossal Carrot Cake" (a triple-layer carrot cake). There are also several kid menu options for those too young to eat the adult portions. You can also choose to just have a cup of soup or chili if you are not up to it. There are several 'simple' options on the menu. |
The place was born originally as a gas station/repair shop but they went out of business in the early 1980's. The place was then renovated as a restaurant for a scene in a movie - the restaurant set up was kept in the building and the first McAlister's restaurant was born. McAlister's - should one somehow have not visited this place yet in their lifetime - is a place one must visit, especially the one in Oxford, the first McAlister's ever built. I'm lucky enough to live in a town where restaurants are born and to see the original masterpiece. I'll will have another next week, I will go to a different restaurant every week. | |
